For real, you may be the citizen of a particular country by birth, nationalization, registration or descent but you cannot merely prove it with just your words of mouth. You have to back it up with an officially approved and original document that clearly identifies you as having citizenship rights to that country. In Nigeria, the card is processed and issued by a Government-managed institution known as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Their branch offices are situated in all the 36 states of the country so as to grant easy access for the citizens to register for their Identity cards.

To register and get your National Identity Card in Nigeria, simply locate and visit any of their offices closest to your location with supporting documents like you Birth certificate, your original WAEC result issued by the WAEC office and other documents as may be required from you by the commission. Once you have them with you, you will undergo a computer registration process during which your photograph as well as other personal details, data and information about you will be taken and stored for the purpose of printing the ID card.

However, you will not get the original plastic Identity card on the spot. It will take months for the commission to produce it for a given batch of citizens registered during a specific period. Meanwhile, you will be given an Electronic print out slip which will serve for the meantime as an evidence that you have registered for you ID card pending the release of your original copy by the commission. Hence, you can tender the slip for official purposes and situations where the document is needed.

Once your original plastic National Identity Card is ready, the commission will notify you through a text message or a phone call inviting you to come to their office and pick it up. Collect it as fast as you can and start making use of it as a medium of identifying yourself as a citizen of Nigeria. You can photocopy it and keep the duplicate copies should in case you loose the original copy.

Endeavour to renew your National Identity Card as soon as it expires. The duration of the ID card is around 4 years, so take good note of that.
