Vast disciplines of learning make up life and life itself is indeed ladened with choices. While many people may choose to study engineering in school, many others desire to become lawyers, doctors, chemists and health practitioners. That’s very good but those are their choices anyway. As an accountant, if given the opportunity to study Surveying, I’ll firmly choose Accounting over and over again. Everything happens for a reason. There is always a cause behind motives and for my own personal reasons; I have rather opted for this great choice.

Firstly, all human beings are accountants by default. Every day, we make budgets, spend and calculate. Most women can tell you the number of days their new body cream lasts before they purchase a new one. That is simple accounting for you in a layman’s practice. Accounting affects all areas of human life and endeavors. Surveying may do but I’d rather be an accountant to get ready and properly equipped for the last day when all souls will ‘compulsorily’ stand before the creator and present an individual account of their lives. What if you are not a professional accountant?

Let all sentiments be set aside. Virtually, all organizations in the world need the services of an accountant. Ranging from the profit-making and non-profit making entities, sole proprietors to corporate organizations and even churches, all need adequate records of their financial operations and transactions to be kept properly for forecasting, predictive and confirmatory purposes. This is quite convincing. Accounting is the language of every business. If surveyors could be compared to accountants, to what extent are surveyors relevant to every organizations as accountants are presumed to be?

The accounting profession gives you credibility in the eyes of the masses. It makes you outstanding, stainless and transparent especially if you are conversant with the professional skills, knowledgeable in the field, and objective. Accounting is practiced with due care, diligence and integrity. People can trust and confide in you because of your proven accuracy even in other areas of life like religion and social responsibility which are not related to accounting in any way. But the truth still remains that surveyors are widely seen as ‘professionals in rugged covers’ even when they are too good to be ignored and neglected. The reason for this general notion is what I cannot tell because it has never crossed my mind before. I’m not yet ready to be seen as such for now. What else but Accounting forever?

Furthermore, as an accountant, you can work with all professionals, get accustomed to endless organizational cultures, gain versatile knowledge of the basic ‘Modus Operandi’ in different fields and become intellectually sound. When I worked with a Drink-Producing company as a periodic production floor supervising accountant, I learnt how to perfectly operate the PET bottle blowing machine. Even in the surveying firm, my little exposure during a single field trip with a crew of surveyors has given me much insight than you can imagine into the field. And so it applies to many other areas. All I can say is that accounting gives me that unlimited opportunity to tap amazing knowledge from vast sources into my ever-learning intellect and make myself a better person as the dawn of the new mornings unfolds day by day. However, I’m still very far from believing it whenever someone looks at me in the face and tells me that surveying can do such a wondrous thing for me. If it can, please redirect my mind into the right path from my ignorant oblivion.

Lastly, I can boldly tell you without mincing words that accounting is the only food that can effectively quench the hunger ravaging within my deepest soul. I call it the ‘Sine qua non’ of my life because I am very sure that I cannot do without it. Cut off from accounting, I believe I am lifeless and I imagine myself existing as nothing. I do not actually know why but that is the exact handwriting on my wall. It may interest you to know that the passion I presently have for the profession was right there with me in my mother’s womb even before I saw the world of varieties. We are inseparable, oh lovely Accounting! Whenever I remember the admirable corporate outfits of accountants, the bold tie hanging on the neck, the soothing knock of shining shoes on the floor, the ‘Casio calculators’, the working papers, the financial statements and all other outshining facets of the noble profession, my heart leaps for joy and gets gladdened always for the fact that I am one of them. If you call me ‘Accounting’ as a name, I will proudly answer you because the course is an integral part of me. What an unconditional love! I cannot derive such a natural joy from surveying. I so much doubt it given the fact that I have seen ‘rugged’ styles, bush wallowing, boat sailings, carriages and the likes of them which does nothing to me but to sap away the interest of working in me even before the job begins.

Finally in a nutshell, there may be unfulfilled accountants living sadly in this world of tears but I really want to make the difference and show something in accounting out of nothing. My footprints must be left indelible in the sands of time as a professional accountant such that when the present generation must have gone into extinction, I will be remembered by the unborn souls. Surveying may be a very nice course of study but deep within my heart, the beat I hear all the time always sounds ‘ACCOUNTING’ !!!
