Turkey farming is a very profitable and fun business activity. Usually, they are poultry animals raised for meat production, egg production and even as pets in some households. Mainly, it is the Tom - the matured male turkeys that are uses for house pet purposes. This is business that will help you make a lot of money. As the global demand for meat and poultry products keeps on increasing day by day, investors are quickly going into this business so as to supplement the meat derived from chickens, quails, pigs, cows, goats and other various livestock animal. In Nigeria, USA, Lebanon, Canada and various parts of the world, this is a business that has raised billionaires because of the popular demand for nutritious turkey meat. Before you can start raising turkeys, you need to first of all, know the basics of the business so as to do it right and ensure optimum returns from your investments of time, money and efforts.

You need to be passionate about raising turkeys before you can ever go into the business and succeed. If your mindset is focused only on the money then, I am afraid you may not see the turkey grow to give you the money. Raising turkey is similar to raising chickens for meat and egg if you have done so before. But in this case, the young turkeys known as the poults needs more petting and babying to grow well. And one noticeable thing about turkeys is that they are social birds which are free with human beings to a greater extent than the chickens. So get ready to spend some of your time everyday with them.

But it is not all about starting a turkey farm. You need to choose the breed of turkey that you want to raise. The Broad-breasted Whites turkeys are widely recommended because they are the most popular breeds in this modern age. They are the ones that are usually seen well-packaged in supermarkets, frozen food spots and hotels. Irrespective of whether you raised them in a cage or around a pasture in your farmland, their meats are more flavoured and tasty than those of other breeds. Also for the purpose of raising turkeys primarily for meat production, you can also stock your turkey farm with the White Holland and the Standard Bronze turkey breeds are also ideal.

While the Broad-Breasted Bronzes turkeys and the Whites are just cross-breeds from other actual breeds for the purpose of boosting meat production for turkey farmers, the Standard bronzes and the White Hollands turkeys are the main and original breeds. You may also like to know about the Heritage turkeys which include the likes of the Narragansetts and the Bourbon Reds which though are raised for meat production, are more raised for the purpose of controlling farm pests, insects and for foraging reasons. By looks and behaviours, they are sharp, striking and medium-sized turkeys. Again, the Royal Palm turkeys are very colourful turkeys which are usually small in nature and each of them can attain a weight ranging from 10 to 16 pounds on full maturity and growth.

As soon as you make a choice of the turkey breed that you want to raise in your farm, the next thing is to buy them look for a nearby turkey farm where you can find those breeds and source them (the young turkeys - poults) from the farmer at very cheap and affordable rates. It depends on the area and location where you are making this transaction. Take them to your farm and raise them. It is ideal to start with the one-day-old poults in the spring time. at the initial stage, make a brooding section and raise them there just as you do for young chickens. Procure brooding items like the feeders and drinking troughs. A heat source to warm the poults is also very necessary. For the first week, ensure a brooding room temperature ranging between 90 degrees and 100 degrees Fahrenheit for the poults. Then for the subsequent weeks, gradually reduce the brooding temperature by 5 degrees until the brooding period is over.

Here is what you really need to know about housing and fencing your turkeys. While most turkey farmers that I have come across before let their turkeys to freely wander and breed within a large area of land with a movable roost assembly just like the movable coop for the chickens which is usually fenced and protected to ensure the safety of the poultry animals and farms, others prefer to raise them in cages in a bid to save space and enlarge their farms with more turkeys. But the open range method remains the best method as it allows the turkeys space to move about freely, grow healthily, find some food for themselves, get access to free ventilation and adapt to harsh weather conditions too. However, a farm land with short grasses which are around 4 to 6 inches in their average lengths is the best place to rear your turkeys. The recommended grasses for a turkey farm includes the kentucky blue grass and the Red clover grasses. For each flock of 12 turkeys, make available a space of around 75 feet square or 1/8 acre in size for them. With this measurement, get an ideal pen for raising any number of turkeys that you want.

On a very important note, please endeavour to see that your turkey farm is duly fenced and free from pests and wild animals like the racoons, foxes and coyotes whose favourite meals are turkeys. You can make a strong wooden fence for your farm but if you can afford to construct the electric net poultry fences made with woven wires, that will be the best for your turkey farm. Always keep the farm and grasses as fresh and neat as possible by moving the farm roost every week to clean up the farm. roost to clean ground weekly. Also, keep your feeders and drinkers as neat as possible to prevent them from getting too stained with the poultry droppings which can prove harmful to the health of your turkeys.

As you set up your turkey farm, you also need to consider how to feed them to ensure their good health and maximum yield. On a minimum, you will need 2 containers of water to feed a dozen for turkeys every single day. You can fetch water from a neat source and give to your turkeys or you can connect the water automatically to your farm from a water source. As for the feeders, you can construct wooden feeders each of which can contain feeds weighing around 100 pounds. This will be enough to feed 12 turkeys every day such that as the attain full maturity, each of the turkeys must have been taking a pound of feeds daily.

Always monitor and examine the health conditions of your turkeys so as to prevent diseases from breaking out in your farm. A veterinary doctor can be contracted to do this for you and render expert health care services to your turkeys. On your own part, ensure a good level of hygiene on your turkey farm by cleaning up the fields, cleaning the movable roosts, providing fresh and clean water and feeding the properly and sufficiently with the right feeds. Grant them enough space to move around and do not rear them together with the chickens and other poultry and livestock animals. Make sure that the breeding space for your turkeys is well ventilated to allow free movement of air in your farm. Put appropriate fencing and security measures in place to prevent them from predators and pests.

As the turkeys attain maturity, sell them off to buyers which includes restaurants, hotels, schools, households, individuals, event planners, frozen food managers, supermarkets and many other potential customers. Everybody eats turkey meat and the demand for it is very high everywhere. You can as well slaughter, process and package the turkeys in your farm and sell to buyers. The process is very simple and similar to that of chickens. Make a scalding pot available for defeathering them with warm water. Cut them into parts and package them. Freeze the meat in a freezer for storage reasons and sell them as your customers come. If you are keeping your turkeys for their eggs, pick the eggs up as soon as they lay them, put them in crates and sell them to buyers. Turkey eggs are highly priced and more nutritious than chicken eggs. That is why you will also generate a great sum of money selling them.

As you keep your turkeys, combine them in a proportion of one male turkey (the Tom) for every 10 female turkeys (the Hens). This will help them to reproduce optimally and your farm will expand and grow into a very big turkey outfit within a very short period of time. Enlarge your farm as you make more money from your business. Also, you can get more detailed information about turkey farming from an experienced poultry farmer so as to better equip yourself with a good knowledge of how to start this business and run it profitably into the foreseeable future.
