Another profitable side of livestock farming and agriculture which ensures maximum returns of investors capital and funds is the Piggery business. As soon as you go into this business and do it well, you will continue making money every day of your life and you will never live in a state of financial lacks and distress again. Obviously, this is simply because of the fact that the meat from pigs - pork, has a very high demand in many parts of Nigeria where people consume it and thus, is a fast selling livestock product. Not only for that reason. Also, Pigs are domestic animals that reproduce and give birth to a large number of offspring and grows very fast too in proportion to the quantity and quality of their feeds.

In a single birth, a single female pig can deliver as much as 15 piglets at once and this amazing attribute outstands Pigs one of the most reproducing mammal all over the planet earth. The gestation period for female pigs (i.e the pregnancy period from fertilization to birth) takes an average 114 days. A female pig will take an average of 5 or 6 months to reach maturity. The male pigs mature after 11 to 12 months. While the young pigs are called the farrows, shoats or piglets, the matured female pigs as referred to as Sows while the matured male pigs are known as the Boars. A group or collection of pigs is either called a Drove or rather, a herd.

It is quite a great pity that many ignorant Nigerians still underrate this business of pig farming as well as the promising financial prospects that it offers despite the fact a it is a very profitable venture. Even those that do not know how this Goldmine business actually works will open their dirty mouths to tell you that it is a dirty man's business. However, if you decide to do this business on a part time basis or passively, you may not really get the full facts as regards its profitability. It is only when you set it up and manage it on a full time basis that you will start making a lot of money from the business and getting steady bank deposit alerts from your numerous prospective customers every day.

For as high as N30,000 or even more on the average, a fully grown and matured pig can be sold out to customers here in the Nigerian markets. And assuming in a single year you succeeded in raising like 200 pigs,on a small scale basis that will give you a very sumptuous estimated annual revenue figure of N6 million. Larger scale pig farmers can even raise as much as 3,000 pigs in a single year and sell them off to cash in a cool N90 million Naira for that very year from the sales of their pigs into their bank accounts. Considering the rate at which pigs give birth to the young farrows, coming up with a pig farm that can produce 100 or 200 pigs in a year is not a very big deal at all.

Having given you a brief insight into this business plan, let me go forward to guide you how the much I can on how to set your own pig farm and start making money from the business in no distant time. Below are some of the important and basis directions which you must conform with as long as setting up your own profitable piggery is concerned:

(1). Get a spacious Breeding farm:
It all depends on your proposed scale of operation. Get a piece of land for your pig farming business. You can use anyone you already have, buy, rent or lease land in some other places. However, 5 acres of land for a medium or large scale is not bad at all. This will give your pigs enough space to graze and feed openly after which they will also go to their pens to play and continue their feeding there. I consider land as the main asset you need to invest in while starting this business because it will consume almost half of your start up funds.

You can buy cheaper lands in rural areas, remote locations and villages. For as low as N200,000, you can buy an acre of land in such places. Buy the much you can and operate your business from there after which you will transport your pigs at maturity to the city markets for sale at attractive and high profit margins. At a point, your customers will know you very well and start coming to your farm on their own to buy your pigs. Then, you will save your transportation costs and risks and also, give room for more profits to roll into your pockets. A good pig farming practice demands that you should occasionally leave your pigs to wander around the green pasture areas so that they themselves will find their foods and save you some feeding costs. That is why you need a big and secured piece of land. However, always take charge and monitor them closely so that they do not get lost or taken up by strange persons.

(2). Construct Standard Pig Pens:
To safeguard your pigs from injuries, contamination and diseases, you need to make big and spacious pens for them. Put a proper drainage system in place so as to avoid having stagnant water portions all over your pen which may end up attracting insects and other dangerous pests to attack your pigs. Alongside the pens also, construct a water pool for your pigs so that they do not get dirty always. Naturally, pigs swim and play a lot and they like rolling their bodies over cool floors, moist areas and water so as to remain healthy always. Always endeavour to change the water for them as soon as it becomes necessary so that they can always be neat.

(3). Procure Healthy Piglets of good species:
To avoid big financial losses and ensure healthy piggery, make sure you start your pig farm with healthy pigs that are from notable and strong species. Find any trusted, experienced and reliable pig farmer around you, buy healthy pigs from him and vaccinate them as at when due. For a start, please I will advise you not to buy to many young pigs if you are still a beginner in this business. Start with the little you can effectively manage even if you have millions of money with you and from there, enlarge your pig farm gradually. This will obviously help you to learn this business, get a clearer knowledge of the appropriate and best practices and also, minimize your potential risks, challenges and losses that may arise in the process as a starter.

(4). Contact a Veterinary Doctor:
This is compulsory as for your pig farm. Your pigs must undergo regular check ups and receive proper vaccinations from a Veterinary doctor so that their good health can always be assured at all times. You can also get expert nutrition and feeding tips fro the veterinary experts so as to better take care of your pigs. In general terms, it may interest you to know that pigs are omnivorous animals and as such, they can feed on whatever food items eaten by human beings. So their feeds are very easy to get. I do not mean that you have to start cooking beans, yam porridge or rice and stew for your pigs. No, you have to source their food from food related industries and establishments as well left over foods from households and even farms. Also, there are specialized foods manufactured for pigs. Buy them at cheap prices from livestock feed makers and they will get your pigs fattened within a very short period of time.

(5). Employ staffs to work with you:
You can employ labourers to work in your pig farm with you and help you in the feeding of your pigs, cleaning of their pens, organizing their daily activities, watching over their movements and doing other necessary things proper for their upkeep. The larger your scale of operation, the more staffs you have to employ in the business.

(6). Source and buy Feeds for your pigs:
Pigs are livestock animals that eat a wide variety of edibles just like human beings. You need to provide them with balanced diets at all times so that they can always look healthy. Mix their food with assorted food inputs, edible components and dietary supplements that contains nutrients like vitamins, fibres, carbohydrates, energy foods, minerals and proteins. The feeding of pigs is the major area where you will spend a lot of money daily as you run your pig farm. The more healthy feeds you give to them, the bigger they grow and the stronger they get. Always provide them with a very clean, hygienic, cool and fresh drinking water.

Create a wallow for them so that the pigs can wash dirts out of their faces while standing in the water troughs when tipped. Always keep them cleaned up and provide enough water from time to time. Construct the galvanised water troughs because they are very strong for the pigs to push down, very durable and also, they very easy to clean up whenever they are messed up. Although there are other automatic drinking facilities, pigs do not enjoy using them as they do while catching fun as they drink from their accustomed water troughs.

As soon as you fix all these requirements and put the in place, you can comfortably start this business and wait for your profits. All you need to do is to make out good time for your pigs, give them the required attention and always take care of them passionately and grow your farm from strength to strength. In this business, your profits are assured. As your pigs mature, sell them off to butchers, households, restaurants, hotels and other outfits and individuals that will make demands for them from time to time. Sell young pigs also to new pig farmers and make more money. Pig droppings can be sold to makkers of organic fertilizers and even directly to farms to even make more money.

In Nigeria, this business will be best done profitably and efficiently in almost all locations of the nation apart from the Northern region whose Muslim religion does not permit the consumption of pork.
